Sacramento Head Injury Attorneys

Head injuries resulting from auto accidents, bicycle accidents, and pedestrian accidents and other types of accidents can cause permanent disability, personality changes, memory problems, emotional distress, cognitive challenges and pain and other serious complications. By definition, trauma to the head, brain, or skull is a head injury. Head injuries can range in seriousness from mild to fatal. With any head injury, there is always the risk of a traumatic brain injury, which can occur whether or not the skull is fractured or penetrated.

Open Head Injuries

Open head injuries, also called penetrating head injuries, involve the penetration or fracture of the human skull.  The penetration can be caused by something striking the head, such as a bullet, or the head striking a stationary object.  Open head injuries may also occur when the skull is fractured and bits of the skull bone are pushed into the brain. Skull fractures and penetrating head injuries can result from car accidents, construction accidents, motorcycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, bicycle accidents, falling objects, violent attacks, and other accidents. The two most common types of open head injuries are linear skull fractures and depressed skull fractures. Other types of skull fractures are diastatic skull fractures and basilar skull fractures.

Open Head Injury Treatment
After an open head injury, doctors will assess damage using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans, along with monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP). Surgery is very often necessary to repair a fractured skull and stop bleeding. With any open head injury, there is always significant risk of infection, because the skull is compromised and cannot fully protect the brain from the environment.

Closed Head Injuries

A blow to the head without the skull breaking or fracturing is a closed head injury. Closed head injuries can be very serious or even fatal, even without obvious visible trauma. If you suspect an injury in yourself or your child, it is important to get evaluated by a doctor immediately. Symptoms of a closed head injury may include:

  • Cerebrospinal fluid leaking from nose or ears
  • Convulsions
  • Dilated pupils
  • Dizziness
  • Emotional and behavioral changes
  • Headache
  • Inability to move one or more limbs
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Nausea vomiting
  • Respiratory issues
  • Speech and language problems
  • Stiff neck
  • Vision issues
